Unlike other ceramic materials, porcelain has the property of being translucent. This quality allows the material to have a particular interaction with light and how it is processed: cool and neutral white light is radiated as warm light. Depending on the form and finish of the porcelain, such effect can vary.
These possible variations are what this project explores. Three porcelain discs with different characteristics in form and thickness work as luminaries with three special effects. Whilst the fixtures do not have the intensity to light a whole space, they do work as decorative, mood setting objects. The three effects are the result of the interaction of porcelain with light, affected by patterns, color, and thickness.
In combination with OLED panels, the installation is an exploration for new applications in porcelain, taking the material to its limits in shape and turning its physical properties into its aesthetic value.
